Safe Car Wash app helps to identify possible slavery victims
22 April 2019
If you are thinking about getting your car washed, download the Safe Car Wash app, which can help car owners spot potential victims of modern slavery and trafficking. The data can then be shared anonymously with the National Crime Agency and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority.
The Home Office estimates there are more than 10,000 victims of human slavery in the UK. This means that people are being forced to work for little or no pay in a variety of industries. One area where exploitation is thought to be widespread is hand car washes.
Between the app’s launch in June last year and December, 2,271 completed entries were made via the app, with a staggering 41% of responses showing there was a likelihood of Modern Slavery at their location.
Where concerns were reported:
- 48% of reports said workers didn’t have access to protective clothing
- 80% said the car wash had a cash only policy
- 17% commented that workers looked fearful.
Overall, almost 1,000 reports of potential slavery or forced work were reported via the app in just five months.
The National Crime Agency supports the app, and have said that hand car washes were a high-risk business for exploitation, and the report into the results of this app gave a further insight into the problem.
Download the free app on to your smartphone, then answer a short survey when you are visiting a hand car wash:
