Commissioner signs contract for Portsdown Hill speed cameras
01 April 2026
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has confirmed that work to install ten average‑speed cameras on Portsdown Hill will begin this month.
The news comes significantly ahead of schedule after the Commissioner fast-tracked the procurement process and awarded the contract worth £560,000 this week.
The early start marks rapid progress since the Commissioner first announced in December that she would invest in cameras to tackle speeding, dangerous and anti‑social driving on one of Hampshire’s most hazardous routes.
Over the past five years, 61 people have been injured and four have lost their lives on this stretch of road, making it one of the most dangerous in Hampshire. The new average‑speed system will support Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Portsmouth City Council in reducing speeding, improving driver behaviour, and restoring peace for residents.
PCC Donna Jones said: “I promised residents swift action, and that’s exactly what’s happening. The contract is signed, and work will begin now. This is a vital step toward stopping the dangerous driving, noise, and anti‑social behaviour that has affected motorists and residents for too long.”
Works to install the cameras will take place throughout April and May, with the system expected to become operational once installation and final calibration are complete.
