Safer Hampshire Business Partnership

The Safer Hampshire Business Partnership brings together businesses, professional organisations, police, and public sector agencies.  The aim of the partnership is to work together with the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and local business communities in identifying, understanding and preventing business crime.

By working together we will:

• Understand the extent and impact of business crime through improving reporting and increasing community engagement
• Increase the business community’s confidence in the police
• Improve intelligence and crime prevention
• Communicate and publicise actions emanating from the group

A BCRP is a subscription-based, business-led, non-profit making action group working with police and the local authority to tackle and reduce crime and disorder affecting businesses. The overall aim is to create a safer environment within which businesses can operate and contribute towards the overall prosperity of an area.

Businesses routinely gather information about losses and loss prevention incidents, they will often detain offenders, record their details for a civil prosecution or claim and then serve the offender with a self-penned or self-policed banning order. An accredited BCRP serves to gather and hold this information for its member businesses. By collating it in one place they can establish trends and patterns as well as compiling lists of offenders before passing back relevant information in a data protection compliant manner to all relevant members, therefore allowing the member businesses to be more aware.

All this is overseen by a dedicated trained coordinator who is able to advise businesses on best practice and who will act as an advocate for the members in meetings with police and other bodies.

If there is no BCRP in your area, you could contact your local Business Improvement District to find like-minded businesses and get in in touch with a BCRP nearby to learn about how best to go about setting one up.

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a business-led not-for-profit organisation that is funded through a levy collected from businesses within a defined area. With the money collected the BID then delivers additional services to the businesses within the BID area, making improvements to the town centre; benefiting those who pay into it as well as residents and visitors.

BIDs are created through a ballot process and there are currently more than 300 BIDs operating across the UK. A Business Improvement District is a defined area in which a levy is charged on all business rate payers in addition to the business rates bill. This levy is used to develop projects which will benefit businesses in the local area.

The Federation of Small Businesses provides small businesses of all types with business services from legal advice to free banking, networking opportunities, and a powerful lobbying voice with local and national government. The Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is a membership organisation comprising of local business organisations of all sectors and sizes. As a private sector, not-for-profit company we are independent and can therefore lobby effectively to make Hampshire the place to do business.

The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce is accredited by the British Chambers of Commerce. Based at Newport’s Mill Court, the IW Chamber represents hundreds of Island businesses and thousands of employees. The Isle of Wight Chamber is a membership organisation, not-for-profit and independent of local and national government.”

With almost 90 national brands as members the National Business Crime Solution (NBCS) enables the effective sharing of appropriate data between the police, crime reduction agencies and the business community, and proactively targets criminality to reduce crime and risks to all.

The National Business Crime Centre was created as a result of Home Office Police Transformation Funding. Its aims are to:

• improve partnership with the business community and raise national police standards, and to accurately understand and reduce the impact of crime
• enable businesses to target resources more efficiently, through effective intelligence and information exchange, disrupting organised business criminality at a national level
• prioritise prevention, enabling businesses to protect themselves from cyber, fraud and terrorism by being a conduit of best practice and a centre of excellence supporting all businesses throughout the UK.
