Following the serious assault of an officer in Southampton at the weekend, the Police and Crime Commissioner, Michael Lane, said:
“Yet again this weekend officers have gone forward to protect us and to intervene when members of the public have been at risk. This is their job – and on behalf of all our communities I thank them for their professionalism and bravery. My immediate thoughts are with the injured officer and his family.
“It is not acceptable, and will never be acceptable, that attacks are made against our police and other emergency services.
“It is right that the groups of people who create tension and violence on our streets should be held to account. And it is right that any unprovoked attack on a police officer or member of any other emergency service attracts an appropriate penalty.”
